Released on March 10, 2015 in honor of Harry Bertoia's 100th Birthday.
Harry Bertoia designed his line of sculpted wire furniture for Knoll INC throughout the fifties. Among the many variations of chairs he produced, perhaps the most iconic is his dining side chair. It is particularly unique that Bertoia found a need to scale down his original design for adults (a 29.5” overall height) to two other sizes offered in Knoll catalogs of the period - both 24” height for children and 20” height for infants. The latter being specifically rare and of minimal production is what we offer here.
When we discovered this particular chair it was 1 of 4 chairs to have sat outdoors experiencing minor rusting and loss of paint - a common condition for pieces of this age group. Of the four chairs found, only one had managed to escape the problematic weld breaks that can occur in the wire mesh seat of the chair. Being that this 1 chair was a perfect specimen; we nominated it for the highest of restoration acts we can conduct: 24Kt Gold plating. Professionally executed with electroplating technology in an astonishing mirror finish.
Our next design decision was to apply our favorite hue (that can be seen in many of our works) "Marfa Red" - a blazing fluorescent red inspired by Marfa's wild desert landscape and biblical Texas sunsets. The original sled base of the chair received this coloring by means of industrial grade powder coating. Upon completion, the 2 components were re-joined with fasteners identical to those used by Bertoia. The result is magnificent.
